Maintains a 100% transition to reusable to-go containers at on campus dining facilities that was established in 2014
○ In 2017, over 230,000 Styrofoam to-go containers were diverted from the landfill due to thereusable to-go containers utilized by 5,000 participants in the SFA dining halls.

Launched the first campus-wide plastics recycling program in 2016
SFA Dining invested in 36 recycling receptacles for campus-wide use.

Half Time Hustle and Fourth Quarter Hustle
Hustle
○ SFA Dining operates and promotes The Halftime Hustle and 4th Quarter Hustle recycling competitions for student organizations. Participants collect plastic recycling during halftime at SFA Men's Basketball games and the 4th quarter of home football games, and earn volunteer hours. There is a grand prize, 2nd and 3rd place prizes. This program highlights student groups that support recycling to a huge audience at sporting events, making the participants leaders in campus recycling. Last year,  8 student organizations collected 312 lbs. of plastic at 10 sporting events during the 2017 Halftime and 4th Quarter Hustle.

Recycle mania
• SFA Dining participates in RecycleMania by tracking campus wide recycling, resulting in SFA winning the South Land Conference benchmark division two years in a row. During KAB Recyclemania, SFA recycled a grand total of 39,530 lbs of recycling from February 2017 - April 2017.

  • The breakdown of material SFA recycled:
    Per Capita Classic (Lbs/ person): 7.15 lbs/ person
    Corrugated Cardboard (lbs/person): 3.95 lbs/ person
    Compared to trash values, SFA diverted over 26% of material from the landfill.

LOVE FOOD. HATE WASTE.
• 
2 Waste audits are conducted in each dining hill per semester to track post-consumer waste. On average,  participants waste 2-4 oz of food per person. This information is used to motivate students to reduce food waste individually and implement changes related to finding, like menu changes if foods appear undesirable and changing serving pieces from paper to reusable plastic based of the percentage of paper found in post-consumer waste.
• Leftover food is donated during semester breaks to Godtel Ministries. Last year, over 3,000 pounds of food was donated by SFA Dining to those in need.
• SFA Dining encourages students to skip straw use in an effort to reduce plastic waste.

Dining Services partners with campus to recycle cardboard from all dining locations across campus. We are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint. Look for signs in our locations for information on where to put your recyclables.

Join the Halftime Hustle Competition!
Halftime Hustle (HH) and 4th Quarter Hustle (4QH) are recycling competitions for SFA student organizations. At every SFA home basketball or football game, student orgs will collect plastic bottle recycling during halftime or 4th Quarter. After collection, the volunteers will weigh the bags and receive credit in the form of recycling weight totals and volunteer hours. The Student organization that collects the most recycling (weight) by the end of the season, wins $400, donated by Student Services. The second place prize is $200 and third prize will be $100 in either dining dollars, catering or a meal plan.

Trayless Dining

Did you know Dining Services has been trayless since 2008? By dining trayless, you have helped positively impact the waste stream. Dining trayless minimizes food waste, conserves energy and water, and reduces the amount of cleaning chemicals entering the waste stream.

To-Go Options

To-Go Option #1: Grab & Go

Grab & Go air screens are available at the front of the SC and EC Dining Halls. Students can tell the cashier they want “Grab & Go” and the cashier will direct them to the air screen, where they can enjoy a prepackaged entrée, 2 sides and a to-go drink. This is the quickest option for students on the go.
To-Go Option #2: Eco To-Go Reusable To-Go Containers

Students can use their SFA ID card to check an Eco to-go box in and out from the dining hall. Once checked out, students can fill up their box with food from the line. Students can take the box out of the dining hall and eat where they please. To get another box in the future, students must check their box back in. Students can check boxes in at the EC Dining Hall, SC Dining Hall, The Diner at EC, Einstein’s and the C-Store. The box will be cleaned and sanitized in the dining hall. Students are not responsible for cleaning their box, but they are responsible for returning them to use another. If box is not returned, students can pay $5 for another box or participate in dine-in or our other to-go option.

What are Eco To-Go Containers?
Eco To-Gos are durable and leak resistant, opaque containers. They are:recyclable (#5), BPA free (Bisphenol A is a potentially harmful chemical found in plastics), National Sanitation Foundation Certified (gold standard for sanitation), sanitized per the Texas Health Department regulation. And of course, the reusable containers reduce waste. Last year SFA disposed of over 7,600 disposable to-go containers weekly! That's over 230,000 during an academic year!

It's just 3 simple steps: Swipe and Eat, Return and Repeat!

Containers can be returned (during normal business hours*) to any of the following locations' cashiers:
- C Store, BPSC
- Einsteins
- EC Dining Hall

Fryer Oil Recycling

One hundred percent of dining services used fryer oil is recycled by Quest Recycling Services.

Hydration Stations

Dining Services offers several hydration stations throughout campus. Use the filtered water stations to refresh and refuel while helping to impact your carbon footprint.

Recycled Content Paper

We use 30% recycled content office and copy paper in all dining locations on campus.

Green Cleaning

All dining locations are committed to using daily green cleaning products in our operations to reduce the need for chemical based cleaning products and provide a healthy and safe learning environment.

Energy & Water Conservation

We train our employees each semester on common energy and water conservation practices in order to conserve precious natural resources.
